The Bengal government’s troubles show no signs of abating after doctors protested against the rape and murder of a female resident doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. Now doctors in Bangladesh have written a letter to the health department. He hereby demanded the immediate dissolution of the West Bengal Medical Council. He said in the letter that the West Bengal Medical Council should be dissolved immediately due to alleged corruption and illegal practices.

The letter states that there are serious concerns over the existence of the West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC). The doctors said they noticed that Manas Chakraborty continued to serve as the registrar of West Bengal Medical College without any valid government order. This matter came to light only from Chakraborty’s side. This is not only abnormal, but dangerous. Because this could have serious legal implications for the state’s medical industry.

The letter states that given the need for immediate action in this matter, there are several points that need to be noted.

1. Illegal occupation of the post of Registrar: Manas Chakraborty remained as Registrar after his retirement. He was only granted a six-month extension, but that period has long since expired without any formal government appointment. His continuing to hold this important position without legal authority has serious legal implications. The validity of thousands of registration certificates signed by unauthorized persons is now in serious doubt.

2. Public trust and legal status undermined: Irregularities in the appointment and functioning of the Registrar undermined the Council’s legal status and its ability to function as a legitimate regulatory body. It is extremely worrying that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has allowed such an important position to be taken over, thus jeopardizing the registration process of doctors who are supposed to serve the public with integrity.

3. Corruption and criminal ties: As already reported, several members of the WBMC, including the chairman, are under investigation for illegal activities, some of whom have resigned and others who have been suspended by the Ministry of Health. The Registrar’s illegal appointment is another symptom of the corruption and criminal nexus that pervades the WBMC.

4. Legal and Medical Consequences: Unauthorized actions by the registrar cast doubt on the effectiveness of all registration-related processes. This could have catastrophic consequences for the healthcare system. A doctor’s registration may be challenged in court, and patients may question the credentials of a medical professional they trust. This situation poses a direct threat to the legal and medical infrastructure of West Bengal.

5. Urgent action required: In view of these important issues, there is a need for immediate dissolution of the West Bengal Medical Council. The illegal occupation of the post of Registrar is a manifestation of serious corruption within the Security Council. Only by dismantling and establishing a new, transparent, and legally strong agency can the state ensure the integrity of the medical profession and protect the public from further harm.
