24 people, including an Indonesian citizen, were burnt alive by a mob in the hotel of an Awami League Party leader in Bangladesh. Local journalists and hospital sources gave this information on Tuesday. Recently Sheikh Hasina had resigned from the post of Prime Minister and fled the country.
Most of the victims, who were staying in the hotel, were burnt alive late on Monday night. The mob set on fire the Jabir International Hotel of Awami League general secretary Shaheen Chakladar in Joshore district. A local journalist told a news agency in Dhaka over the phone, ‘An Indonesian citizen is also among the dead.’
24 bodies counted
He said doctors at Joshore General Hospital have confirmed that they have counted 24 bodies, while surviving hotel staff fear there may be more bodies under the debris. Media reports suggest that an unidentified mob protesting against Awami League (AL) rule started a fire in the basement of the hotel, which soon spread to the upper floors.
Almost identical reports came in from across the country, where angry mobs simultaneously vandalized the residences and business establishments of several Awami League leaders and workers, including the Awami League central office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.
Chaos spread in Bangladesh on Monday after Hasina resigned, secretly defected to India and the army arrived to fill the power vacuum.
A new phase of violence begins in Bangladesh
As soon as the news of Hasina’s departure spread, a new round of violence started in Dhaka and other parts of the country. The mob damaged government property and even entered Hasina’s official residence and looted it.
