The situation in Bangladesh is still not normal. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Chief Justice of Bangladesh Obaidul Hasan and five other judges of the top appellate division have resigned. This step has been taken at a time when after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, there was a massive demonstration on the streets by students demanding reforms in the judiciary. The protesters had surrounded the Supreme Court and given an ultimatum to the judges to resign.

Students had given ultimatum

The protesters had entered the Supreme Court on Saturday and issued an ultimatum to the 65-year-old Chief Justice to resign by 1 pm. After this the judge resigned. Professor Asif Nazrul, Advisor on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, said that the resignation of the Chief Justice has reached the Law Ministry. Nazrul said that the resignation letter will be sent to President Mohammad Shahabuddin.

Hours after the Chief Justice announced his resignation, five other judges of the top court submitted their resignations to the President through the Law Ministry, Supreme Court Registrar General Aziz Ahmed Bhuyan told reporters.

Why were the protesters demanding the resignation of the Chief Justice?

The protesters allege that the Chief Justice is a follower of former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina. The protesters also demand that the country’s judiciary be reorganized. Let us tell you that after the political turmoil in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina had resigned on Monday and left the country and went to India. After this, 84-year-old Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took oath as the head of the interim government on Thursday.
