Ban on award to MS Subbulakshmi, a major blow to SC musician TM Krishna

Karnataka musician TM Krishna received a heavy blow from the Supreme Court on Monday. The Supreme Court has ruled on the issue of awarding the prestigious Sangeet Kalanidhi MS Subbulakshmi Award to Karnataka musician TM Krishna. The court said that TM Krishna should not be considered as the recipient of the MS Subbulakshmi Award pending further investigation.

The Supreme Court barred Krishna from emerging as a recipient of the award. The court took the decision while hearing a petition filed by Subbulakshmi’s grandson V Srinivasan. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court issued a notice to singer TM Krishna Music Academy in this regard. Musician TM Krishna has allegedly written defamatory articles against Subbulakshmi.

TM Krishna won the award just yesterday

Karnataka musician TM Krishna was awarded the prestigious Sangeet Kalanidhi MS Subbulakshmi Award yesterday. Meanwhile, the court today refused to recognize TM Krishna as the recipient of the award. In the petition, Krishna was accused of making derogatory remarks about the late singer. Meanwhile, the court will now hear the next case in the case in six weeks.

Since 2005, the Sangeet Kalanidhi Award is presented by Press Group of India. This year, TM Krishna received the prestigious Sangeet Kalanidhi Award. Meanwhile, Srinivasan has approached the Supreme Court challenging the Madras High Court order in this regard. The High Court dismissed the interim order restraining award to Krishna.

She is the first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna Award.

Ms Subrakshmi’s grandson V Srinivasan said in the petition that he was opposed to the Krishna award. He said Krishna’s derogatory and reprehensible attacks had tarnished his grandmother’s reputation. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has issued notices to Krishna, Sangeet Academy, The Hindu and THG Publishing Private Limited and asked them to respond within four weeks.

Krishna had commented on the veteran singer in December 2017. He had said that Ms Subrakshmi had to distance herself from her ‘Devdasi’ roots to be accepted by the upper caste society. Let us tell you that MS Subbulakshmi is a famous Indian classical music singer. As a classical singer, she has achieved countless achievements. She is the first musician to receive the Bharat Ratna Award.
