Aatish was elected as the new Chief Minister of Delhi at the Aam Aadmi Party legislature party conference. She will be the third female Chief Minister of Delhi, following Sushma Swaraj of the BJP and Sheila Dikshit of the Congress.

A first-time MLA from Kalkaji constituency in Delhi, Atishi ran most of the ministries in the Kejriwal government. He is considered one of the closest people to Arvind Kejriwal. Ever since Kejriwal announced his resignation, there have been speculations that Atishi could become the next chief minister of Delhi. Now, the matter has also been officially released. Atishi was elected as the next chief minister at the AAP legislature party meeting.

He became a provincial legislator for the first time in 2020, a minister in 2023, and the chief minister in 2024… Adisha’s political journey is a “miracle”

He has been actively involved in the organisation since the Anna Movement. He has been at the forefront of the party and government since Kejriwal went to jail. She is from a Punjabi Rajput family and graduated from Oxford University. Other names being discussed for the chief ministerial post include Kailash Gehlot, Gopal Rai and Saurabh Bhardwaj.

Sushma Swaraj has been Chief Minister for 52 days

The two women who served as chief ministers before Atishi included Sushma Swaraj of the BJP and Sheila Dikshit of the Congress. In 1998, Delhi saw its first female chief minister named Sushma Swaraj. Sushma Swaraj was appointed as the chief minister after the then chief minister Sahib Singh Verma had to resign before the assembly elections due to the rise in onion prices. Sushma was able to serve as the chief minister for only 52 days and when the election results came in, the BJP suffered a crushing defeat. The BJP won 49 seats in 1993 but it was reduced to just 15 seats five years later due to the opposition.

Congress appoints Sheila Dikshit as Chief Minister three times

After the Congress won the elections in 1998, the Congress appointed Sheila Dikshit as the Chief Minister of Delhi. After that, in the 2003 elections, the Congress again won an absolute majority. This time the Congress won 47 seats and the BJP won 20 seats. After that, in the 2008 assembly elections, the Congress won 43 seats and the BJP won 23 seats. Sheila Dikshit served as the Chief Minister for 15 consecutive years.
