Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar and Srijaya Chavan
The Bharatiya Janata Party has announced a list of 99 candidates for the Maharashtra assembly elections. The BJP has fielded children of senior leaders, including two third-generation leaders, in many seats. Shrijaya Chavan has emerged as candidate from Bokar seat while Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar has emerged as candidate from Nilanga seat. Both leaders inherited politics from their families. Under such circumstances, it remains to be seen whether the third generation of the two political families can prosper in politics.
BJP candidate Shree Jaya Chavan’s father Ashok Chavan and grandfather Shankarrao Chavan both served as chief ministers of Maharashtra. Similarly, Sambhaji Patil Nirangkar’s grandfather Shivaji Patil Nirangkar also served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Both political families hail from the Marathwada region. Shree Jaya Chavan hails from Nanded district, while Sambhaji Patil family dominates Latur district. The Chavans and Nilankars have a strong presence not only in Marathwada but also in Maharashtra politics.
The BJP is yet to open an account in Pokhar.
Pokar is one seat in Maharashtra where the lotus of the BJP is yet to blossom. The Shiv Sena, an ally of the BJP, has been contesting from this seat. Shreejaya’s father Ashok Chavan won by a margin of over one lakh votes. This seat has been the traditional seat of the Chavan family. Ashok Chavan’s father Shankarrao Chavan has been serving as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra since his victory here.
Ashok Chavan’s wife Amita Ashokrao Chavan entered the Assembly by winning the Bhokar seat in the 2014 elections and now daughter Shree Jaya Chavan’s political launch is underway from the Bhokar seat. This seat has always been very favorable to the Congress party, but with the Chavan family joining the BJP, the lotus flower is expected to bloom this time.
Sambhaji Patil third generation leader
The Nilangkar family dominates politics in Marathwada. Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar, born in the Nilangekar family, is the candidate for the third generation leader of the Nilanga constituency in Latur district of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Sambhaji Patil’s grandfather Shivaji Nilangekar was the chief minister of Maharashtra in 1985-86. The Nilangkar family has the greatest influence in the Latur region. From 1999 till date, only members of the Nilangekar family have been elected from Nilanga seat in Latur district.
Sambhaji Patil competes for third time
The political legacy of the Nirangakar family was inherited by his son Dilip Nirangakar. His politics are now in the hands of Shivaji Patil’s grandson Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar. Sambhaji Patil is contesting for the third time on behalf of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was elected as a BJP MP in 2014 and 2019 and served as a minister in the Fadnavis government. Considering the political hold of the Nilangarkar family in the seat, the BJP is betting on Sambhaji Patil.
