Supreme Court
The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the central government, Delhi government and other parties while hearing a petition related to Delhi University. The petition claimed that the Lyngdoh committee recommendations were not followed during the student union elections held across the country, including in Delhi University.
The Supreme Court had earlier directed that student union elections held across the country should follow the instructions of the Lindau Board. The petition stated that the parties failed to comply with the court’s instructions. The court has directed these parties to file their replies within four weeks.
What recommendations does the Lyngdoh Committee have?
The Lyngdoh Committee has made some recommendations on holding student union elections in the country’s universities, with the aim of preventing the influence of force and money and making the electoral process smooth. As per the recommendations, students can contest only one election and can spend up to Rs 5,000 on the election.
Candidates and their organizations will be prohibited from accepting election donations. There will be a total ban on posters, advertisements and banners in public places during the election period. Weapons of any kind will also be banned from college campuses. If the rules are violated, the candidate will be suspended for two years and will not be allowed to take the exam that year.
