A young woman died in Alihar village in south Kashmir’s Pulwama due to alleged medical negligence by doctors at a private hospital, prompting authorities to order an inquiry to determine the responsibility.

The patient, Saboora Arshid, 22, daughter of Arshid Hussain Bhat, lives in Arihal, Pulwama and is currently receiving treatment at the Muhammadiyah Nursing Home. She was scheduled to undergo a minor nose surgery at the hospital on Saturday.
According to reports, after the patient was taken to the operating room, hospital staff did not inform his family of his condition for several hours.
It was three hours later that hospital staff told the family to rush the patient to a government hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, apparently due to complications.
The incident, which took place late on Saturday night, sparked outrage among the public, who demanded action against the hospital and called for an immediate lockdown of the facility.
Authorities responded quickly, ordering an investigation and sealing off the operating room as a precaution, hours after the incident.
According to officials, pending the outcome of the investigation, the Pulwama GC will work with the Chief Medical Officer and SHO of Pulwama to immediately seal the operation theatre of the Mohammadiyah Nursing Home.
“This step is taken to ensure that evidence and records related to the case are preserved,” officials said, noting that the process will be carried out as per standard operating procedures. “The entire process will be videotaped to ensure transparency and proper documentation,” they added.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) has also set up a committee to investigate the death of the patient, which was allegedly caused by medical negligence.
An official order issued in this regard stated: “In order to conduct a formal inquiry into the death of one Saboora, a patient of Muhammadiya Nursing Home Pulwama, due to alleged medical negligence on September 14, 2024, daughter of Arshid Hussain Bhat, a resident of Arihal Pulwama, an inquiry committee is hereby approved for its establishment.”
The committee will include DHSK assistant director Dr Yasmeen Kangoo (as chairperson), DH Shopian consultant anaesthetist Dr Masood Rashid and SDH Kreeri consultant surgeon Dr Imran Ali (as member).
“The inquiry committee will conduct an in-depth investigation into the death and submit a report within a week with specific recommendations so that appropriate action can be taken against those responsible in accordance with law,” the order stated.
