December 13, 2024: Actor Allu Arjun has been arrested in connection with a stampede outside a theater in Hyderabad last week that left a woman dead. The popular actor made a surprise appearance at the theater for a screening of his new film Pushpa 2: The Rule and a stampede ensued.
Mr. Arjun was taken to Chikkadpally police station from his home in Jubilee Hills. The actor’s father – noted film producer Allu Arvind – and other family members were present when he was arrested.
Hyderabad police had earlier filed a case against the 41-year-old star and several others, including members of his security team and the management of the city’s Sandia theaters.
On December 11, he moved the Telangana High Court seeking an order quashing the case.
Charges of manslaughter not amounting to murder and wounding with intent have been laid.
The investigation will now focus on two questions – whether Mr Arjun had police permission to appear at the theater where his “special show” was being held.Pusha 2: Rules” and whether he has the right to interact with moviegoers outside the theater, which is located in an area where other movie theater lobbies are located.
A 35-year-old woman was killed and her 9-year-old son was injured in the stampede as large crowds pushed each other to catch a glimpse of Allu Arjun’s sudden arrival. Allu Arjun and the film’s music director Devi Sr Prasad made a surprise arrival.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand said at the time, “There is no hint from the theater management or the cast team…that they will visit the theatre…” and pointed out that even the theater was not provided with a separate entrance or exit. Even though the theater knew they were coming.
According to police, Mr. Arjun arrived at the theater at 9:30 pm. When word spread of his arrival – he entered through the front entrance and stayed outside for 15 to 20 minutes – hundreds of people flocked to get a glimpse of him. The situation worsened when his security team began pushing the crowd away.
