Many high-tech weapons are being used in the racial violence between Meitei and Kuki in Manipur. To find out these weapons, India Today scanned dozens of videos related to the Manipur violence. Also, the weapons seized by the Manipur Police from 1 June 2023 to 12 September 2024 were analyzed.

It was found that apart from Indian weapons, the Kuki rebels are using weapons made in China, America, England and Myanmar. Most of these weapons are the ones used by Indian security forces as well. Such as AK-47, Insan, 7.64 mm self-loading rifles and stun carbines made in the Isapore factory.

Manipur police has also seized the advanced indigenous ‘Ghaatak’ gun made in India. The biggest problem and concern is foreign weapons. Apart from this, Heckler & Koch 5.56 rifles made in Germany.

The Chinese variant of AK-47, AK-56, Myanmar’s MA1 MK-3, and the British-made MK-5 rifle have also been seen with the Kuki rebels. They have been seized. The Kukis live on top of the mountains, while the people of the Meitei community live in the valleys.

HE-36 Mills and MK-3A2 hand grenades, apart from this, 51 mm and 81 mm mortar bombs have also been found. These are fired by Kuki rebels from local launchers. These launchers are made from steel pipes. These are called Pumpi. The 51 mm mortar can target up to one kilometer and the other one up to 5 kilometers.

There are also high-explosive anti-tank weapons capable of blowing up tanks. So that they can blow up armored vehicles as well. The rebels of the Kuki National Front Military Council or Kuki Army also have RPGs. These fire 80 and 85 mm grenades. Information about RPGs was received when the Raging Day of the Kuki rebels was being held on the Thangjing hills of Churachandpur district.

How many weapons were confiscated

From May last year to February this year, police arms depots have been looted at many places. The exact number of arms looted is not known yet. But it is believed that Kuki rebels have looted 4000 arms in a year.

Manipur Police has registered 161 incidents of arms seizure till September 10 this year.

India Today’s analysis shows that Manipur Police, along with other security forces, are trying to recover stolen weapons. In the last one year, Manipur Police has seized weapons from 161 places so far. From January 1 to September 10, 2024, the highest number of weapon recovery cases (33) are from Kangpokpi. This is followed by 25-25 in East Imphal and Thaubal, 24 in Churachandpur, 19 in Kakching and 14 in Bishnupur. After the incident of drone bombing in East Imphal on September 1, the police has also deployed anti-drone systems.
