Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar
Devendra Fadnavis will expand the cabinet in Maharashtra after nine days of government formation. Apart from the BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde) and National Communist Party (Ajit), leaders of some smaller parties are also said to be getting a seat in Fadnavis’ cabinet. Ajit Pawar seems shocked by the cabinet package unveiled so far. The same was true when Ajit’s party got the best strike rate in the assembly elections.
The formula for a minister to get 5 provincial councilors
According to the current cabinet expansion situation, every five provincial councilors will be equipped with one ministerial position. According to this formula, Ajit Pawar can get up to 8 ministerial posts. Ajit has now joined the cabinet.
Ajit had a total of 9 ministers in the Eknath Shinde government. That means under the formula, they would have to give up a cabinet minister. Who Ajit will drop also remains a topic of discussion. Because all the ministers from Ajit quota have reached the Assembly after winning.
The suspense over the Deputy Speaker also continues to exist
In the previous government, Ajit Pawar served as Deputy Speaker. Narhari Jirwal of Ajit holds this position. This time Shiv Sena (Uddhav) has demanded the post of Deputy Speaker. Uddhav’s party believes it should be handed over to the opposition as per tradition.
In 2019, the NCP, the second largest ruling party, won this position. Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena is also interested in the deputy speaker’s post. Shiv Sena is the second largest party in the government. It is said that only he can get the post if the Shinde Sena insists on it.
Ajit was also demoted in the department
Even in terms of divisional distribution, the Ajit Group did not get many concessions. According to Marathi TV-9, the BJP will retain the finance and home ministries. Even when Shinde and the BJP formed an alliance in 2022, the BJP kept it, but after Ajit came to power in 2023, the financial business was handed over to him.
However, it is now reported that Ajit will be handed over to the Ministry of Public Works and Public Property. It is said that Eknath Shinde will be appointed as the Urban Development and Revenue Department.
The BJP retained the revenue department in the Shinde government. If Ajit does not get finance, this will be the first time he will serve as deputy chief without a finance department.
Why was Ajit demoted? 2 reasons
1. Quantities and equations of MLA
When Ajit came to NDA, things were different. The BJP was in the lead by adding Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar so Ajit was given priority in the cabinet but now things have changed .
The Bharatiya Janata Party is also the largest party this time, but this time its government is not too dependent on anyone. The BJP is only 13 steps away from the majority and can easily reach it at any time.
That is why no ally is putting pressure on the BJP this time. Ajit Pawar doesn’t want to go into risk mode at all.
2. More seats but fewer votes than uncle
Although Ajit Pawar’s party won 41 seats in Parliament, his vote share was much less than that of his uncle Sharad Pawar. According to the Election Commission, Ajit Pawar’s party got 9% of the votes while Sharad Pawar’s party got 11% of the votes. However, only 10 of the candidates supported by senior Pawar were able to win the election.
If this seat is discarded, Sharad Pawar still leads in terms of votes. He also raised this issue recently. It is reported that Ajit received a huge number of votes in the NDA this time.
In the 2014 and 2019 elections, the NCP received between 17% and 17% of the vote. This time the two of them received about 21% of the votes together. This means about 4% more.
It is said that these 4% votes will go to Ajit.
