Airtel and Jio join forces to block Starlink, Elon Musk’s tensions rise

Satellite internet services are about to be launched in India. With the launch of this service, Elon Musk’s company Starlink can officially enter India. However, for Elon Musk, it’s not that easy. Rival Indian telecom companies Airtel and Jio have added to Musk’s nerves. The two companies have joined forces to prevent Starlink from entering India. Starlink has applied to provide satellite internet services in India from October 2022. However, it has yet to receive regulatory approval from the government.

Airtel and Jio go hand in hand

Apart from Starlink, Amazon Kuiper is also in the race to launch satellite internet services in India. Apart from this, two leading telecom companies Airtel and Jio are preparing to launch satellite broadband services in India. Both companies have received approval from the Telecom Ministry to launch satellite internet services in India. Once the spectrum is allocated, the two companies can launch satellite internet broadband services.

Recently, the Minister of State for Communications said in the Lok Sabha that suggestions from stakeholders have been sought for spectrum allocation for satellite broadband services. The telecoms regulator is likely to release relevant updated information before December 15. Jio and Airtel want to allocate spectrum for satellite internet services through auctions, while Elon Musk’s company Starlink does not want to do so. The government is trying to find a middle path between these companies. However, if early reports are to be believed, spectrum allocation for satellite services appears to be taking place administratively.

Benefits of Satellite Internet

After the satellite Internet service is launched, Internet access will be available even in places where there is currently no mobile network. This will especially benefit people living in hilly and forested areas. Not only that, once satellite Internet is launched, the tense situation of communication interference during emergencies will also end. Users can access satellite internet services without any mobile towers or fiber optics, so everyone can access the internet.
