After Russian President Vladimir Putin, now Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni has also said that India can play an important role in ending the Ukraine war. Russia and Ukraine have been embroiled in a war since February 2022. Meloni’s remarks came during her address at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio on Saturday. She had met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shortly before this. The Ukrainian President was also present on the stage with the Italian PM when she made this remark.

During her address, Georgia Meloni said, ‘It is clear that if international laws are violated, the conflict and crisis will increase further. But it is also clear that as the crisis increases, the global economy will naturally be affected. Violation of international laws and rules and economic globalization cannot go together. I believe that the role of China and India can be important in resolving the conflict. The only thing that cannot happen is to think that the conflict can be resolved by leaving Ukraine.’

Ukraine’s support comes first for Italy: Meloni

Meloni said, ‘For Italy, the choice to support Ukraine has first and foremost been a choice of national interest, and this is a choice that will not change.’ During his visit to Ukraine on 23 August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Volodymyr Zelensky to engage in direct talks with Russia and stressed that the two countries should not delay in ending the war. Let us tell you that this was the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister there after Ukraine separated from the Soviet Union and became a separate country in 1991. Immediately after returning from Ukraine, PM Modi had a phone conversation with US President Joe Biden and then Russian President Vladimir Putin.

India can play a role in peace talks: Putin

Two days ago, Vladimir Putin also acknowledged that India could play an important role in finding a solution to the ongoing crisis in the region. Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin stressed that the compromises that were agreed upon during the Istanbul talks and could not be implemented could become the basis for future peace discussions. Putin named three countries that were in touch with him on the Ukraine conflict, including India, and said that they were making sincere efforts to resolve the crisis.

We have never ruled out peace talks: Putin

Vladimir Putin had said, ‘Are we ready to negotiate with them (Ukraine)? We have never refused to do so. But the talks will not be based on some short-term demands, but on the documents that were agreed upon and actually initiated in Istanbul.’ In addition, Putin suggested that China, India and Brazil could potentially act as mediators in future peace talks related to Ukraine.

Supporting Ukraine is morally right: Meloni

Russia had earlier said that Ukraine’s incursion in the Kursk region had made peace talks impossible. Vladimir Putin’s remarks came weeks after PM Modi stressed India’s ‘firm commitment to support an early, lasting and peaceful solution to the conflict’ during his visit to both Russia and Ukraine. Meanwhile, Georgia Meloni said that Italy will never back down from its support for Ukraine. She said, ‘The decision to support Ukraine is not only morally correct, but also in the national interest. Because it is aimed at protecting the rules made to protect the national integrity of Ukraine.’
