The political atmosphere in Haryana has become very interesting at the moment. Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) contested the recently held Lok Sabha elections under an alliance. This alliance benefited Congress and helped it win 5 out of 10 seats, while AAP lost the only seat of Kurukshetra by a small margin. But was this alliance based only on the electoral equation for the Lok Sabha, or was there some other thinking behind it? Was the script for the assembly alliance also written at that time?

Is the cream of anti-incumbency wave the basis of Congress-AAP alliance?

Both Congress and Aam Aadmi Party believe that there is an anti-incumbency wave in Haryana. The biggest opposition party or alliance is expected to benefit from the growing support against the NDA government. For this reason, experts believe that the alliance of these two parties is not just an election strategy but is being done with a long-term vision. Now the question arises that why is AAP looking to strengthen its coordination with Congress?

The answer is pretty clear: AAP is part of the INDIA alliance, of which Congress is the largest member. It is AAP’s priority to work with all opposition parties inside and outside Parliament to formulate a common strategy on their issues. AAP believes that if they maintain strong ties with Congress, they can play a more influential role in Haryana’s political landscape. For this reason, in the current situation, Aam Aadmi Party cannot ignore the growing influence of Congress and in view of this, AAP wants to continue its coordination with Congress.

Why is there a difference of opinion between Haryana and the central leadership?

Congress’s top leader, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, and some other state leaders have different opinions about this alliance. Hooda is not in favour of leaving any seat for AAP. He believes that the Congress organization is in a strong position on all seats in Haryana and any kind of alliance with AAP can further intensify the rebellious tone within the party. The Hooda camp believes that the Congress is capable of forming a government by securing a majority on its own. In their view, when the Congress itself is in a strong position, then why is there a need to form an alliance with a party that has weakened the Congress in Haryana’s two neighboring states, Delhi and Punjab?

Citing this example, the Hooda camp says that giving a chance to AAP can harm Congress in the long term, like it happened in Delhi and Punjab. On the contrary, Rahul Gandhi has a different view, who was once against any alliance with AAP. He has advocated coordination with AAP in Haryana. There is a big thought hidden behind this new strategy of Rahul. He wants to give the message that Congress takes care of its allies and gives priority to the politics of harmony.

There is also a problem regarding the number of seats and choice

There are some more twists in the talks of alliance between Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress. At this time, the issue is not only how many seats are to be given in total, but also which seats are going to whom. Initially, Aam Aadmi Party had demanded at least 10 seats out of 90 seats. But recent reports suggest that AAP has reduced its demand to 5 seats. This is probably an attempt to show flexibility in the party’s strategy, so that talks on alliance can be taken forward.

However, despite reducing the number of seats, AAP wants some selected seats where it is confident of fielding its candidates. On the other hand, Congress is hesitant to give those special seats which are included in AAP’s choice. This hesitation of Congress and this stubborn position of AAP is becoming an obstacle in mutual agreement. Political analysts believe that this conflict is not just about the number of seats, but also about political power and influence. AAP’s focus is more on major seats where its hold can be strengthened, while Congress is trying to save its position.

What is the ‘Delhi’ connection of Haryana Assembly elections?

The impact of the possible alliance of Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Haryana will not be limited to the state boundaries, but it will also have an impact on the upcoming assembly elections in Delhi. There is a buzz in the political corridors of Delhi that the senior leadership of Congress is keen to form an alliance in Delhi, but the state level leaders are not very excited about this. Congress believes that this time the elections in Delhi will not be as easy as in Haryana. The party feels that to remain in power, they will need the support of Aam Aadmi Party.

This strategy is also important because the fight in Delhi can be tough this time and Congress will need a strong alliance. If there is an alliance between Congress and AAP in Haryana, then bargaining for alliance in Delhi will also be easy. By giving some seats to AAP in Haryana, Congress can hope for the support of Aam Aadmi Party for a strong alliance in the capital Delhi. It is simple math: more seats combined means more votes and political power. This alliance can not only change the political picture of Haryana, but can also change the equation of power in Delhi.

Is winnability a big issue?

There is confusion over the future of the possible alliance between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The winnability of the candidates in the electoral field has also had a profound effect on the possibilities of the alliance. Talks of an alliance between the Congress and the AAP were going on for a long time, the purpose of which was to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party, but now this alliance is in trouble even three days before the nomination deadline.

Signals coming from within the Congress show that the party leadership is worried about the winnability of the candidates. Many Congress leaders feel that supporting AAP candidates can cause more harm to the Congress. Apart from this, even in the event of an alliance, some Congress leaders are planning to rebel and contest against the alliance candidates. This situation is creating problems not only for the Congress but also for the Aam Aadmi Party. Dissatisfaction is also being seen among the workers and supporters of both the parties, which can weaken the electoral strength of the alliance.
