Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday launched the new phase of the Ayushman scheme Ayushman Bharat ‘Niramayam (people free from diseases)’. Prime Minister Modi launched development projects worth around Rs 12,850 crore at an event organized by the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in Delhi. Now, all senior citizens aged 70 and above will be able to get free treatment under major health insurance plan Ayushman Bharat. This major initiative in the health sector has been launched on the occasion of the ninth Ayurveda Day and the birth anniversary of Dhanvantari, the Hindu god of medicine.

Free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh per year will be provided

Under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), all senior citizens aged 70 years and above will get health insurance. The facility will be open to seniors from any income group. Free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh per year will be provided. Apart from this, families already availing the benefits of Ayushman Yojana will be able to get individual treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh per annum for their senior members of the family. This will benefit more than 60 million elderly people in about 45 million households in the country. Currently, the program only covers low-income families, while the program for seniors has no income limit.

How can the elderly get free treatment?

The scheme will provide a special Ayushmann card to senior citizens, which will be different from the family Ayushmann scheme. These special cards go on sale on October 29th. Prime Minister Modi gifted cards to many senior citizens during an event in Delhi. Union Health Minister JP Nadda and many other ministers and officials were also present during the occasion. These Ayushman cards will be made through the BIS portal Ayushman app, for which senior citizens will also have to update their Aadhar card and KYC. Senior citizens with private health insurance can choose between private insurance and Ayushman Bharat scheme insurance.
