one country one election act
Getting the central government’s “one country, one election” proposal passed in parliament has become a major challenge for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). To pass the bill, a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives is required, but the NDA currently only has 292 seats and 362 seats are needed to pass it.
All political parties in India are opposed to one country, one election. 47 political parties have made submissions to the Ramnath Kovind Committee on the bill, of which 32 parties support the bill and 15 parties oppose it. The number of opposition members in the People’s House of Representatives is 205, which has become a major obstacle to the passage of the constitutional amendment. Despite the government’s attempts to build consensus on the issue, seeing unity among the opposition, this does not appear to be happening.
