A massive gas explosion occurred in a coal mine in South Khorasan Province, Iran, killing at least 30 people and injuring 17. Iranian state television reported on Sunday that 24 people were still missing.

State television reported that the accident was caused by a methane gas explosion in two blocks of the mine operated by Madanju, adding that 69 workers were inside the two blocks at the time of the blast. Government media reported that the blast occurred at 9 p.m. local time on Saturday.

The President expressed his condolences

President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. “I spoke with ministers and we are doing our best to find out the cause of the explosion,” Pezeshkian said in a television interview. State television quoted the head of Iran’s Red Crescent as saying: “Seventeen injured have been taken to hospital and 24 are still missing.”

The deaths occurred at a coal mine in Tabas, about 540 kilometers southeast of the capital, Tehran, and authorities were sending emergency workers to the area after an explosion late Saturday night, the report said.

There have been explosions before.

This is not the first time Iran’s mining industry has suffered a disaster. In 2017, a coal mine explosion killed at least 42 people. In 2013, two mining accidents killed 11 workers. In addition to this, at least 20 workers died in multiple incidents in 2009.
