A believer dropped his iPhone in the temple’s merit box and refused to return it when asked to return it; learn the whole story

A devotee’s iPhone accidentally fell into the donation box of a temple in Chennai. Thereafter, when devotees asked for the return of the iPhone, the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department refused. The department rejected the devotee’s request saying he has now become the property of the temple. After realizing his mistake, the devotee, Dinesh, contacted the authorities at the Srikanda Swamy Temple in Tirupurpur. He asked for the return of his cell phone, which he accidentally dropped into the donation box while making a donation. The temple management contacted Dinesh after the donation box was opened on Friday following the incident. The temple management said that the mobile phone has been found and can only provide them with the data of the mobile phone. However, Dinesh refused to accept the data and demanded that the phone be returned to him.

No returns allowed

Following this, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister PK discussed the matter on Saturday. It caught the attention of Shekhar Babu. Talking about this matter, he said: “The money deposited in the donation box, even if it is not a voluntary donation, has gone to God’s account.” He said: “According to the customs and traditions of the temple, any offerings in the donation box will be It will be deposited directly into the temple’s deity account. As per the rules, devotees are not allowed to return the tribute.” However, he said he would discuss the possibility of providing compensation to the devotees. He said a decision would be made after consideration.

Such incidents have happened before

In fact, this is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the state. According to a senior official of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, in May 2023, S., a devotee in Alappuzha, Kerala. Sangeeta’s gold chain accidentally fell into the donation box of the famous Palanidanadayuthapaniswamy temple. When Sangeeta removed the Tulsi garland from her neck to offer the offering, the gold chain fell into the donation box. But considering his financial situation and after confirming through CCTV footage that the gold chain had been accidentally dropped, the temple board chairman purchased a new gold chain of the same price at his own expense and gave it to devotees. The official said that as per the Hundi Establishment, Security and Accounts Rules 1975, any offering made in a Hundi cannot be returned to the owner at any time as it has become the property of the temple.
