Our native corn was once associated with bread, vegetables, radishes and mothers. Cornbread and mustard greens. The taste is unique. It would be even better if it was made by my mother. Even though it is famous as the favorite food of Punjabis, just like the Punjabi song, it is popular across the country today. When this corn is fried with salt, it blooms like white flowers. Maybe that’s where the term pop culture comes from, Jo Fudke! Then popcorn culture followed. However, eating it also has its joys. No peel, no seeds, no drippings. The taste is very unique and spicy. Because eating popcorn was fun and passed the time, perhaps it later became associated with entertainment, becoming the most popular and accessible dish in movie theaters.
When I was a teenager, I was used to watching movies. During the intermission in a single theater, I would buy a lot of peanuts and local corn kernels to eat in newspaper boxes, but these were the same vegetables sold next to them. Service tax was levied on multiplexes in metropolitan cities – which started being called popcorn. Half the townies like me at the time couldn’t understand popcorn properly. Frustration will set in. It looks like something for rich people. But there is no doubt that this dish has its own unique entertainment qualities. It was later discovered that popcorn has a very ancient connection with movies. Movie theaters were invented in 1895 and the popcorn machine was introduced in 1893.
Spaced Gourmet Popcorn
Trust me, popcorn is a unique and fun dish that makes this photo a hit. Sometimes even boring movies become popular because of the popcorn. Taste draws audiences to theaters. Later it was hard to say which one was better, the movie or the popcorn. But now that same popcorn also comes with a sales tax. Popcorn has taken the form of a company. In this case, it’s interesting to know when and how popcorn entered movie theaters. The thing these days is that talking about the fun of movies is meaningless without popcorn.
Popcorn was the most popular dish during the hiatus, and we’re not talking about it, the whole world went crazy for it. As soon as GST was implemented, its industries were also approved. Popcorn sellers can now proudly call themselves Popcornpati. What can we say if popcorn comes with a cold drink? Movies are twice as fun. Every scene is thrilling, every shot filled with action and romance. Obviously it will have some history and I bet it will be interesting. So, let’s turn a page in history.
Where there’s a movie theater, there’s popcorn
It was the second decade of the twentieth century. Film also spread from France to the United States. Single theaters were also prevalent in American cities at the time. A silent movie is playing. But audiences soon began to tire of silent films. Then filmmaking technology changed. Movie theaters began to modernize as the talkies era advanced, eliminating audience boredom and boosting the movie theater business.
In the era of silent films, audiences had to rely on street food during intermissions, but in modern cinemas, street food is prohibited in order to maintain cleanliness inside the cinema. But without the delicious dishes, the fun of watching a movie becomes boring. The British wanted double the entertainment. Movies and food go together. In this case, popcorn was invented as a substitute, with the primary purpose of preventing the hall from getting dirty. Soon after the rise of talkie culture, going to the movies became a British habit, and eating popcorn in between became a fashion.
Popcorn boosts movie business
It is said that due to the popularity of popcorn, the movie business has increased a lot. Popcorn has proven to be very helpful in boosting the film industry. In the 1930s and 1940s, as the American film industry stagnated due to a lack of innovation, movie theater owners turned to selling popcorn. This became a new source of income. Its sales are launched together with special discounts on movie tickets. As movies drove fashion and food trends, popcorn became America’s favorite snack.
When Charles Crater invented the electric popcorn machine in 1893, little did he know it would become a revolution in the film industry. Later, with the help of this machine, popcorn spread from markets and restaurants to movie theaters around the world. Because it is easy to make and eat, it gradually spread from the United States to Western countries such as France, the United Kingdom, and Italy, and also to Asian countries such as India, where it became an entertainment dish.
Its popularity is said to have grown very rapidly during World War II. Confectionary products became expensive due to sugar rationing whereas popcorn was not rationed so people could still get it easily. In developed countries, popcorn became an essential part of movie theaters after the 1950s. Today, many shows such as “Popcorn Time” and “Popcorn News” are also popular.
Millennials and Popcorn Culture
Previously, the custom of popcorn in India was limited to metropolitan cities, but after 2000, as walls went up in cinemas and large shopping malls across the country, the popcorn business began to take off. This was the period when popcorn culture took off in India. It was also two steps ahead of disco and pop. Now the government has brought the same popcorn under the ambit of GST. There are different types of popcorn available in the market and hence they are taxed according to taste. Notably, service tax was previously levied on popcorn in theaters, but now GST will be levied. That means if you want to eat popcorn while watching a movie, get ready for a different kind of entertainment.
