Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for a two-day visit to the Middle Eastern country of Kuwait today, December 21. Forty years later, the Indian Prime Minister is visiting the Gulf countries. Prime Minister Modi’s visit is to further strengthen multi-faceted relations between India and Kuwait.
Prime Minister Modi will hold talks with Kuwait’s top leader during his two-day visit. He will also visit labor camps housing blue-collar Indian workers, speak at Indian community events and attend the opening ceremony of the Gulf Cup football match.

Prime Minister Modi is visiting the country at the invitation of the King (Emir) of Kuwait, Sheikh Meshaal Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah. In addition to meeting the emir, he will also talk to Kuwait’s crown prince and prime minister. These meetings will help both sides strengthen relations in trade, investment, energy, culture, people-to-people and cultural engagement and other fields.
India and Kuwait have very close relations in areas such as energy and trade, but former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi last visited Kuwait 43 years ago in 1981. Then-Vice President Hamid Ansari visited the West Asian country in 2009.
Why is the Prime Minister’s visit so important?
The foreign ministry said on Friday it was discussing a bilateral investment treaty and a defense cooperation agreement with Kuwait. Arun Kumar Chatterjee, secretary (overseas Indian affairs) in the ministry, said some bilateral agreements are expected to be finalized during the prime minister’s visit. Arun Kumar Chatterjee said that this visit is expected to open a new chapter in India-Korea relations. He said it was also expected to strengthen defense and trade cooperation.
