Colombo: When hundreds of Rohingya were on the verge of drowning in the sea off the northeastern coast, the Sri Lankan navy became a godsend. Marines rescued more than 100 Rohingya people, including 25 Burmese children, who were stranded on the northeastern coast. The men were spotted by local fishermen in Vella Mullivaikkal area of ​​Mullaitivu district on Thursday.
There was speculation that the men were heading to Australia or Indonesia. But suddenly their boat got stuck in the middle of the waves on the beach. “We don’t yet know how they got into trouble at sea or where they were going,” a Navy spokesman said. “They were on a fishing vessel.”
40 women and children
According to the Sri Lanka Navy, there were 102 people on board, including 25 children and 40 women. One of the women, who is also pregnant, has been taken to Trincomalee where further action will be taken, the navy said. In December 2022, the navy also rescued more than 100 Rohingya people in Sri Lankan waters. (language)
