Jerusalem: Even in the near future, Israel will not withdraw from the Syrian buffer zone and Israeli troops will continue to remain there. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the big news on Tuesday. He said Israeli troops would continue to be stationed in the “buffer zone” along the Syrian border, particularly on the top of Mount Hermon, “until other arrangements are made.”
Netanyahu said that he himself climbed to the top of Mount Hermon as a soldier 53 years ago, but in light of recent events, the mountain’s importance to Israel’s security has further increased. Israeli soldiers will therefore maintain their occupation of the buffer zone there. Israeli Prime Minister enters Syrian territory for first time. Israel has seized parts of southern Syria bordering the buffer zone known as the Golan Heights, days after rebels overthrew Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Israel orders deployment of troops
Prime Minister Netanyahu visited the buffer zone with Defense Minister Israel Katz. Katz said during this time he had directed the Israeli military to deploy troops there as quickly as possible because they were likely to be in the area for a long time. Now the Israeli army will maintain its occupation here in the near future. (Associated Press)
