TRAI launches new DND app to reassure tens of millions of mobile users that there won’t be a fake call

TRAI has decided to provide relief to the country’s 1.2 billion mobile users from fake calls. The telecoms regulator recently made major changes to business communications rules to curb spam calls and text messages. Now, the telecoms regulator will launch a new DND (Do Not Disturb) app for mobile users, which will allow users to block business calls and messages on their phones.

The increase in fake calls will be controlled

The regulator made the decision in light of an increase in fraud perpetrated through fake calls and text messages in recent years. If reports are to be believed, the app by TRAI will be launched next year. The telecom regulator has asked all stakeholders to explore the technical feasibility of new artificial intelligence capabilities for DND applications. The app will be launched two months after stakeholders complete technical feasibility.

Around 800 entities and more than 1.8 million mobile numbers were blocked after the telecom company launched an AI spam filter. Telecom operators block fake calls at the network level through artificial intelligence filters. TRAI believes that this blocking should also happen at the user level, for which an upgrade of the DND application is necessary.

Will benefit from new Do Not Disturb app

Currently, users can set their business communication preferences through the Do Not Disturb app. Apart from this, users can report any spam calls but this action will be taken at the service provider level. Unsolicited commercial communications can be controlled through the new DND application.

TRAI launched the DND app in 2016. This app was launched to stop fake calls, but the app didn’t attract many users. TRAI will now upgrade the application to benefit more and more mobile users. Not only that, the telecom regulator has recently made a number of policy changes to curb fake calls and messages.
