The Supreme Court has agreed to examine a petition seeking various measures to address the rising crimes against women, children and transgender people in India and provide a safe environment for them.
On Monday, the court had sought responses from various central government ministries, including the home ministry. The petition was filed by senior advocate Mahalakshmi Pavani on behalf of the Supreme Court Women Lawyers Association. The case will be heard in January 2025.

The complainant’s lawyer said that coincidentally, today is also the 12th anniversary of the Nirbhaya gang-rape incident. Pavani mentioned the tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata, where a doctor was raped and murdered. She said that after this incident, about 95 cases of sexual violence were reported, but they failed to attract the necessary attention at the national level. In his petition, he advocated for harsh punitive measures.

The PIL sought pan-India guidelines to ensure safety of women, chemical sterilization of rapists and a ban on pornography. The apex court also issued notices to the Center and various ministries seeking non-granting of bail and sought a reply within four weeks.
SC also seeks help from Attorney General
The Supreme Court also sought the assistance of the Attorney General to act on these directions. The Supreme Court said some of the directions sought in the petition were difficult. However, the Supreme Court said that the call for a social code of conduct on public transport (buses, trains, airports, airlines) deserves discussion.
The Supreme Court said prayers are important in formulating appropriate norms of social conduct in public transport. This should not only be taught but also strictly enforced as incidents of unpleasant behavior on airplanes have also come to light.
