Cyclone Chito causes devastation in France, around 1,000 dead, sparks panic

Cape Town: Cyclone Chito caused severe damage to the French island of Mayotte. The number of people killed here is probably around 1,000. A senior government official provided the information on Sunday. “I think hundreds of people have been killed, maybe the number is around a thousand,” Mayotte governor Francois-Xavier Beauville told Mayotte’s L’A1ere television channel on Saturday. Severe tropical cyclones hit the Indian Ocean archipelago causing widespread damage, making it difficult to give exact figures.

Mayotte is the poorest region in the EU

Earlier on Sunday, authorities confirmed at least 11 deaths in Mayotte but said the death toll was expected to rise. Mayotte, located in the southeastern Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa, is France’s poorest island territory and the poorest region in the European Union.

Wind speed exceeds 220 kilometers per hour

Chido caused wind speeds exceeding 220 kilometers per hour, damaging several homes in Mayotte, according to Météo France. Mayotte has a population of over 300,000 people spread across two main islands about 800 kilometers off the east coast of Africa. In some places, entire areas were destroyed. Local residents reported that many trees were uprooted and boats overturned or sank. Meanwhile, French President Macron said he was closely monitoring the situation (with verbal input).
