Let us inform you that the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Constitutional Amendment Bill “One Nation, One Election” on December 12 while holding Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections. The cabinet approved two draft laws, one on the Constitutional Amendment Bill related to simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies and the other to the simultaneous elections to the three Union Territories having legislative assemblies.

One of the Constitutional Amendment Bills deals with simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, while the other deals with simultaneous elections to the three Union Territories having legislative assemblies. A two-thirds majority is needed to pass a constitutional amendment, while the second bill requires a simple majority in the House of Representatives.
