Dhaka: A Bangladeshi court has refused to hear the bail plea of Hindu saint Chinmoy Krishna Das, who was arrested on treason charges. The court said the hearing will only be held on January 2, which has been fixed. Chittagong Municipal Council Judge Saif-ul Islam dismissed the petition as the lawyer who filed the petition seeking early hearing did not have a power of attorney to represent the saint, court officials said.
The lawyer does not have a power of attorney
“Lawyer Ravindra Ghosh sought an early hearing after another lawyer told the judge that he (Ghosh) did not have any power of attorney to represent the saint,” a court official said. Following this, the judge dismissed the petition.
Das is suffering from disease
Ghosh said in the petition that Das was arrested on a “false and fabricated case” despite suffering from diabetes, asthma and other ailments. However, the lawyer admitted that he was not jailed to get Varkara Ratnam’s signature from Das. “I will now meet Chinmay in jail and get the Vakalatnama (power of attorney),” he said.

accused of treason
Das, a former leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was arrested on November 25 from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The next day, a Chittagong court sent him to jail. The court rejected his request for bail as he was charged with sedition for allegedly insulting the national flag. (language)
