Temple-mosque dispute intensifies after Ayodhya verdict
After the Supreme Court’s ruling in November 2019 on the decades-long Ayodhya dispute, there was hope that the temple-mosque dispute would not create too big a ripple elsewhere. However, slogans like this were shouted in many places at that time, “Ayodhya is still a glimpse, Mathura-Kashi is still unresolved”. But five years after the “supreme” decision was implemented, the country has seen an increase in cases related to temples and mosques. In many cities, people began to claim the existence of a temple beneath the mosque.
After the Ayodhya verdict, 16 such cases related to temples and mosques have taken place across the country. Among them, there were 9 new cases and 3 old disputes. There are currently four cases that have not yet reached the court stage. Apart from the Baba Budan Giri Dargah in Karnataka, the three disputed old cities include the Jawapi Masjid in Varanasi and the Tiravalli Masjid in Lucknow. A case has occurred here. These four disputes are only under discussion and have not yet been submitted to the court. They are Jama Masjid in Delhi, Bija Mandal in Vidisha and Char Minar in Hyderabad. Minar).
In the past four years, a total of nine disputes related to temples and mosques have been brought to court. Of this alone, 5 cases are linked to Uttar Pradesh, 1 to the national capital Delhi, 1 to Rajasthan, 1 to Madhya Pradesh and 1 to Karnataka.

Tensions arose in Sambhar after a local court ordered a survey of the Mughal-era royal Jama Masjid on November 19 last month. However, at this time the investigation has been completed. But then, on November 24, a second investigation of the mosque was ordered, during which violence broke out. Five people were killed and many others injured in the violence. The matter is now before the Supreme Court.
Jaunpur Atala Mosque
This matter is related to temples and mosques and also to Uttar Pradesh. The Atala Masjid in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district also sparked controversy. The mosque was allegedly built by demolishing the Atala Devi temple. This idea was opposed by the Sunni Central Waqf Council. Shamsi Jama Mosque in Padang
The case of Shamsi Jama Masjid is also related to UP. This mosque is located in Badong District. This is a mosque with a history of more than a thousand years. It was built in the 13th century by Sultan Shamsuddin Iltumish of the slave dynasty. The controversy over this started two years ago in 2022 when it was alleged that the mosque was built by demolishing the Neelkanth Mahadev temple. Hindu organizations have laid claim to the mosque. The matter is now before the courts.
Jama Masjid in Fatehpur Sikri
The case of Jama Masjid in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra is also before the court. Regarding the Jama Masjid here, it is said that there was a Kamakya Devi temple here earlier, which was later demolished and converted into a mosque. The Sunni Central Waqf Board and the Mosque Management Committee are fighting the claim that it is a temple.
Mathura Shahi Idgha Mosque
A case related to the Shahi Idgah mosque in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, is pending in court. In 2020, many organizations claimed that the mosque was built on Krishna’s birthplace. When the matter passed through the District Court and reached the High Court, a Court Commissioner was appointed by the High Court to investigate. But the Supreme Court itself banned the investigation. At least 18 cases related to the Shahi Idgah Mosque have been filed in the Supreme Court.
Controversy over Delhi’s Guwat Masjid
The Quwat Masjid, located near Delhi’s world-famous Qutub Minar, has also sparked controversy. The mosque was allegedly built by demolishing many temples of Hindu gods. The matter reached the courts. In 2021, the court dismissed requests related to the dispute. The court said the peace of this day and age cannot be disturbed.
Mangaluru Jumma Mosque
A dispute between a temple and a mosque in Mangaluru, Karnataka, also came to light. In 2022, it was claimed that there was a Hindu temple underneath the mosque. There are a large number of artifacts and sculptures related to the temple below. Many organizations requested excavations here and investigations by ASI. The matter is still before the courts.
Ajmer Sharif Dargah in Rajasthan
This new controversy has come to light with the world famous Ajmer Sharif Dargah in Rajasthan. This Dargah is that of Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. In this regard, some Hindu organizations claim that there once was a Shiva temple here. It was then destroyed and a dargah was built. The matter is also ongoing in court.
Bhojesala controversy in Madhya Pradesh
The Bhojsala Masjid in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district also sparked controversy. Hindus believe that this mosque is the temple of Vagdevi, Saraswati Devi. Muslims say this is the Kamal Maula Mosque. In 2022, an inquiry was launched against Bhojesala based on the High Court order. In addition to 94 statues of gods, a large number of coins were also found. The case is currently before the Supreme Court.
