At a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Minister Mishri gave a detailed briefing on India-Bangladesh relations. Issues related to violence against minorities in Bangladesh, bilateral agreements and the political situation were discussed at the meeting. After the meeting, committee chairperson Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said the foreign secretary had recently visited Bangladesh to update the committee on the situation.
Bangladesh has assured to take action against the perpetrators of cases of violence against minorities, the foreign secretary said. However, the Bangladesh government termed the incidents as misleading and disinformation and called on India not to interfere in its internal affairs. The Foreign Secretary also said that during the meeting, most members, irrespective of party lines, inquired about Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India.

Around 21-22 MPs present at the meeting raised many questions, the most important of which was about the living conditions of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India. However, the British Foreign Secretary did not make any public response to this. Tharoor also suggested that members of the committee could visit Bangladesh. Apart from this, the possibility of visiting Bhutan was also discussed. The meeting also discussed India’s concerns over attacks on cultural, religious and diplomatic properties between India and Bangladesh.

Mishri expressed the hope that the Bangladeshi government will adopt a constructive attitude on these issues and promote the development of bilateral relations in a positive direction.
