Cairo: A tourist boat capsized in the Red Sea and at least 16 people were missing. Egyptian officials have provided information in this regard. Amr Hanafi, the governor of the Red Sea region, said rescuers rescued 28 people from the boat south of the coastal city of Alam, some of whom were airlifted for treatment. Hanafi visited the site where the ship sank, according to information provided by the Red Sea governorate on Facebook.

Hanafi said there were 44 people on board, including 13 Egyptians and crew members. There were 31 foreigners on board from the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, Belgium, Switzerland, Finland, China, Slovakia, Spain and Ireland.
The boat was hit by a big wave
According to officials, the vessel, named Sea Story, did not have any technical issues and had obtained all necessary permissions before sailing. The last inspection was in March and related to navigation safety. Initial reports were that huge waves hit the vessel, causing it to capsize, according to crew members and tourists. The ship departs from the port of Alam on a five-day journey.

At present, it is not clear why the ship sank. According to its manufacturer’s website, the yacht was built in 2022 and can accommodate 36 passengers. The Egyptian military is coordinating rescue operations with the province. Many tourism companies have closed or restricted trips to the Red Sea due to the threat of conflict in the region.
