Pakistan: PTI leader meets Imran Khan in jail, holds key discussions on protests

Islamabad: Leaders of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party met him at the high-security Adiala prison on Monday as the party’s convoy was heading towards Islamabad. According to the party, 72-year-old Khan has been lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail since last year and more than 200 cases have been registered against him. In some of these cases, Khan has been released on bail, in some he has been convicted, while in others hearings are ongoing. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Gauhar Ali Khan met party founder Imran Khan who is lodged in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. After the meeting, Gauhar told the media, “Yes, I met him (Khan).”

According to the Express Tribune, Gauhar met with Barrister Saif Saif, the jailed founder of the party and information adviser to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and party leader Ali Mohammad Khan. Sources said the purpose of the meeting was to update Khan on the latest developments in the Islamabad protests and seek his guidance on the matter. Gauhar said in a statement after the meeting that the party’s strategy had been discussed with him. In light of the protests in the capital, party leaders want to ensure Khan is fully involved in formulating a course of action. Sources said this was not a pre-arranged meeting as party leaders were scheduled to meet Khan every Tuesday.

Meanwhile, during a march against supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and opposition leader Omar Ayub, Law enforcement agencies fired tear gas as they entered Punjab. The convoy set off from Swabi towards Punjab region but encountered police resistance near Attock Bridge, Chah flyover and Ghazi Barota Canal, who used tear gas to disperse supporters of Khan’s party.
