Texas backs Trump’s plan to deport immigrants; big step forward

Houston: Texas has offered to use 1,400 acres of state-owned farmland near the U.S.-Mexico border to support President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to deport immigrants. In a letter to Trump, Texas Land Commissioner Don Buckingham requested help from federal agencies including the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He proposed using the Starr County property as a holding facility for “violent offenders” before detaining and deporting them.

Buckingham criticized his predecessor’s opposition to building the wall on farmland, saying the move encouraged violence between criminal gangs and the exploitation of immigrants. Texas purchased the land last month to bolster border security efforts, including plans to build a wall.

Trump has made his intentions clear

Trump has signaled his intention to declare a national emergency related to immigration. The move raised concerns among supporters about the humanitarian and logistical implications of expelling millions of people from the country. While Texas supports Trump’s immigration policies, anger over the decision is growing in other states. With the support of Buckingham Palace, Los Angeles passed an ordinance that protects immigrants and limits local cooperation with federal immigration authorities. (language)
