NPP wins resounding victory in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary elections, now Dissanayake will elect new prime minister

Colombo: President Anura Kumar Dissanayake’s National People’s Party (NPP) won a landslide victory in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary elections. So now the search for Sri Lanka’s new prime minister has intensified. The appointment of the country’s new prime minister and cabinet will be completed on Monday. The NPP achieved a record victory in Friday’s parliamentary elections. The NPP won a two-thirds majority in parliamentary elections on Friday and established dominance in the Jaffna constituency, the heart of the country’s Tamil minority.

“We will appoint a cabinet on Monday, which may include 25 ministers, although the number may be less than the total number stipulated in Article 46 of the Sri Lankan Constitution,” senior party spokesperson Tilwin Silva told reporters. Cabinet ministers​ Number limit is 30 people. The total number of deputy ministers shall not exceed 40. Silva said the number of deputy ministers could be higher.

Nuclear power plants will reduce public costs

“We may have to appoint more deputy ministers to deal with larger departmental issues,” he said, adding that the NPP has always advocated for smaller government to reduce costs for the public. Since the NPP won the presidential election in September, the country’s government has consisted of three ministers, including the president. In the parliamentary elections held in the country, the NPP received 61 of the total votes cast.
