Mumbai’s Hindu population will decrease to 54%
A report by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences has heated up the political atmosphere ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Maharashtra. According to the report, Mumbai’s Hindu population may decline to 54% by 2051. The city’s demographics are suffering due to rising numbers of Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants, the report said. Reports indicate that a large number of migrants have settled in slums in Govandi, Mankhurd, Dharavi and Korla.
After the report was published, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya posted on his social media account X to express concerns about the issue. Targeting the opposition Congress party, he said the Mumbai Congress president has assured recognition of all illegal mosques. He also said that Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole has issued a statement to stop the creation of “love jihad” laws in the state and withdraw all cases related to it.
Worried about 54% decline in Hindu population
Reports say Mumbai’s Muslim population is increasing due to illegal immigration from Bangladesh and Myanmar. In 1961, Mumbai’s Hindu population was 88%, which dropped to 66% in 2011. In 1961, Muslims accounted for 8% of the population, which increased to 21% in 2011. The report said that by 2051, the Hindu population may decrease by 54%, while the Muslim population may increase by 30%.
Disclosures in reports
The report points out that the growing migrant population in Mumbai’s slums is putting unbearable pressure on the city’s infrastructure. However, the government does not have clear data on this. Social tensions and violence are also increasing due to economic inequality between local residents and immigrant communities. In addition to this, research also revealed this. Additionally, studies show that 50% of women are trafficked. Once the report arrived, a round of accusations and counter-accusations began among the political parties. NCP’s Sharad Pawar faction leader Naseem Siddiqui rejected the report, calling it an investigative report by the BJP and RSS.
