Akhilesh Yadav.

Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday reacted after the Supreme Court’s verdict on the bulldozing operation in Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh Yadav took a dig at the Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh and said courts are now fining the Uttar Pradesh government for imposing the fine.

What other evidence is needed to prove the spread of anarchy in Uttar Pradesh under the BJP rule, he said. He asked whether the BJP government would use bulldozers on its own.

Let us tell you that the Supreme Court on Wednesday, while condemning the bulldozing operation, ordered the Uttar Pradesh authorities to pay compensation of Rs 25 lakh to one person. That man’s house was demolished in 2019 for road widening projects. The Supreme Court criticized the Uttar Pradesh government, saying it cannot demolish houses overnight with bulldozers. The Supreme Court termed the bulldozing campaign by officials as “anarchy”.

Supreme Court outraged over bulldozing operation in Maharajganj district

A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra delivered the verdict on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court directed the UP chief secretary to investigate matters related to illegal demolitions in Maharajganj area.

The complaint letter was sent to the Chief Justice by Manoj Tibrewal Akash. On this basis, the Supreme Court issued this order while hearing a proactive writ petition filed in 2020. The houses in Maharajganj district were allegedly demolished in 2019.

The state argued that Akash was encroaching on public land. The bench asked: “You said he committed a 3.7-meter violation. We accept that and we won’t give him proof, but how can you start demolishing people’s houses like this?”

The judge said this was entirely arbitrary and questioned whether state authorities followed due process. The Supreme Court stressed that authorities should give families time to evacuate and should follow proper procedures.
