Good news for passengers traveling by air, big changes to rules for using the internet

If you travel frequently by air, there’s good news for you. The central government has made major changes to the rules for the use of the internet on airplanes. The government has released new guidance on internet use during air travel. The government informed that when traveling by air, passengers can access the Internet via Wi-Fi only after crossing an altitude of 3 kilometers.

The new guidelines stipulate that air passengers can only use electronic devices after reaching an altitude of 3,000 meters. The government has issued new guidelines under the Flight and Sea Connectivity Rules, 2018.

The government issues such guidelines to avoid interference with mobile towers on the ground. Now, the newly notified rules will be known as the Air and Maritime Connectivity (Amendment) Rules, 2024.

Let us tell you that in early 2020, the government allowed airlines operating in the country to provide free Wi-Fi services to passengers during air travel. This provision brings great relief to passengers traveling by air. Earlier, there was a ban on the use of the internet during flights, and this comes to an end.

Free WiFi rules set

Let us tell you that apart from providing free Wi-Fi facility while traveling, the government has also laid down some special provisions. The government says passengers must follow certain rules when using Wi-Fi during air travel. The government gives captains the right to turn Wi-Fi on and off. In addition to this, it has been decided that Wi-Fi will be activated in flight only when the flight is at cruising speed. Apart from this, it is also stipulated that all aircraft providing free Wi-Fi facility must be certified by DGCA.
