A big blow to Apple, the EU “crushed” another of the company’s products and made a major decision

Apple has suffered another major blow. The European Commission has directed that another of the company’s products be brought under regulatory purview. The European Commission has asked Apple to bring the operating system used by the iPad under the jurisdiction of the Digital Marketing Act (DMA). The European Commission has given gatekeeper status to operating systems used in mobile devices.

Issue strict instructions to Apple

While sharing this information via its official X handle, the European Commission said that Apple must design its iPadOS in accordance with the terms of the Digital Markets Act. In its post, the European Commission issued the directive saying that Apple, like other brands, should also give users the freedom to choose their preferred web browser on their devices. Additionally, users should be provided with alternative app stores such as the Apple App Store. Additionally, all accessory devices must have access to iPadOS functionality.

The European Commission has listed Apple iPadOS as its core platform service in April 2024. The Commission accords gatekeeper status to these core services. Under this directive from the European Commission, Apple will need to make changes to its iPadOS. This will also impact Apple’s revenue. However, Google gives users the freedom to choose the default web browser in its Android operating system.

Apple submits report

Apple has released a compliance report under this EU directive, which shares details on making iPadOS compliant with the Digital Marketing Act. However, antitrust regulators have not yet investigated the compliance report issued by Apple before they can determine whether the company violated any rules. The European Union provided information about Apple’s release of a compliance report in the thread of its post.

Previously, under pressure from the European Commission, Apple had begun to provide USB Type C charging functionality in all its mobile devices. The company launched the iPhone 15 series last year in 2023 with a USB Type C port. The EU is Apple’s largest market after the United States. In this case, following instructions from the European Commission, Apple could make significant changes to its iPadOS.
