Wikipedia notification
The central government had issued a notification to Wikipedia on Tuesday. This notice is issued in response to several complaints received regarding bias and misinformation on the platform. In its letter to Internet encyclopedias, the government stressed that a small group of editors have necessary control over content, which could affect its naturalness, sources said.
According to sources, the government asked the question: Why shouldn’t Wikipedia be classified as a publisher rather than an intermediary? However, neither the government nor Wikipedia have issued an official statement on the matter so far. Wikipedia is known as a free online encyclopedia. It allows volunteers to create and edit pages on a variety of topics, including issues and knowledge areas.
Condemned by Delhi High Court
Recently, the Delhi High Court condemned Wikipedia. Nearly two months ago, the government warned of a possible ban in India in a case filed by news agency ANI. The Wikipedia page allegedly contains misinformation and derogatory material.
At a hearing on November 1, the court questioned Wikipedia’s claim to be a “free encyclopedia” and emphasized that Wikipedia, as an “intermediary” rather than a publisher, should provide necessary information upon request. Indeed, Wikipedia has faced criticism for alleged bias and misinformation, especially during the U.S. presidential election.
Elon Musk also raised questions
X owner and businessman Elon Musk has publicly accused Wikipedia of supporting left-wing ideology. Musk urges people not to donate to Wikipedia. They claim the platform is controlled by left-wing activists.
