November 3, 2024: Legendary singer Asha Bhosle celebrated Bhai Dooj along with Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar and took part in the traditional rituals of the occasion.
Asha applied tilak on Sheela’s forehead and he sought her blessings by touching her feet, underscoring the cultural significance of the day.
Bhai Dooj has different names across India, such as Bhau Bij in North India and Bhai Tika in Maharashtra, celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. In Bengal it is known as Bhai Phonta, while in southern states like Karnataka and Telangana it is known as Yama Dwitiya. The festival commemorates the day when Goddess Yamuna invites her brother Yamraj for a meal, symbolizing love and family ties.
The sisters perform rituals, including applying tilak and fasting, to wish their brothers longevity and prosperity. In return, the brothers gave gifts and promised to protect their sisters. Although similar to Raksha Bandhan, Bhai Dooj does not involve tying Rakhi. This celebration is filled with ancient Hindu traditions and stories, especially those involving Lord Krishna and Yamraj, emphasizing the eternal bond between brothers and sisters.
