More than 190 people were arrested after complaining about huge irregularities in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary elections

Colombo: So far, 191 people, including six candidates, have been arrested in connection with complaints related to Sri Lanka’s 2024 parliamentary elections. Police provided the information on Saturday. Let me tell you that after the presidential election in Sri Lanka, preparations for parliamentary elections have entered the final stage. According to officials, voting for the parliamentary elections will be held on November 14. Police said they had received 168 complaints related to the parliamentary elections. We are investigating and taking action quickly.

News portal “NewsFirst LK” quoted police media spokesperson DIG (Deputy Inspector General) Nihal Thalduwa as saying, “This includes 30 criminal complaints and 138 complaints related to violations of electoral laws.” He said that so far, arrests have been made 191 people. Complaints related to the 2024 parliamentary elections include six candidates running. Police also impounded 45 vehicles in connection with the complaints. Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission said it had received 1,259 complaints related to the parliamentary elections. The news portal said 13 of the complaints related to violence. The remaining complaints were related to other complaints. All cases are under investigation. Appropriate action will then be taken. (language)
