Diwali is just around the corner. But this time the atmosphere was a little different. Firecrackers have also been banned in Delhi’s National Capital Region, where climate pollution has worsened. But data from a recent survey paint an interesting picture.
In a survey conducted by LocalCircles in Delhi NCR, people’s views on the burning of firecrackers during Diwali this year were mentioned and the impact it has on the environment and pollution. According to shocking figures from the survey, 55 per cent people said they would not set off firecrackers on Diwali as it causes pollution.
Investigation on setting off firecrackers
19% said they wanted to set off firecrackers, while 9% said they would set off firecrackers and they also knew where to get them. And 8% did not give a clear answer to this.
Overall, about 18% of households plan to set off firecrackers this Diwali. However, as per a government order, there is a complete ban on the manufacture, storage, sale and use of firecrackers in the National Capital Territory of Delhi till January 1, 2025.
The government’s decision is aimed at controlling pollution levels as the air quality index becomes very bad during the winter. However, the setting off of firecrackers during the Cavachos festival shows that many people are setting off firecrackers in defiance of government orders.
Air quality index in many places in Delhi exceeds 350
This also shows that some people are indifferent to restrictions and do not pay attention to the damage to the environment. Even before Diwali, the AQI in many areas of the Delhi National Capital Territory had crossed 350, falling under the ‘severe’ category. In this case, bursting of firecrackers on Diwali will further increase the pollution levels.
This can negatively impact the health of children, the elderly and people with respiratory illnesses. People also believe the situation could become more serious if the ban is not enforced properly, the survey showed.
But despite this, people still want to burst crackers as many consider it a part of the tradition while some do it for the sake of the children. At the same time, through awareness campaigns and promotion of alternatives like eco-friendly firecrackers, the situation is expected to improve so that people can follow the tradition and the environment is not harmed.
