There was an uproar at the Juvenile Council meeting on Tuesday over the waqf bill. Soon, a heated argument broke out between TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee and BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay. The matter escalated to the point where Banerjee broke a carafe that was placed on the table. As a result, his hand was seriously injured. He was subsequently sent for treatment and received four stitches on his hand.
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee was suspended for one day by the Parliamentary Committee on Religious Endowments for creating disturbance during the meeting. The voting was conducted under Rule 374 under the leadership of JPC chairman Jagdambika Pal. Among them, 9 votes were in favor and 7 were against the suspension of Kalyan Banerjee. Members of the ruling party were in favor of suspending Banerjee from the JPC. But after discussion, it was decided to suspend it for one day. The next meeting will be held on November 28-29. In the meantime, extensive discussions on the waqf amendment will also continue.
How did the commotion at the meeting begin?
Now the question is, what happened to make Kayan Banerjee so angry and break the bottle. In fact, sources said a speech on Odisha was being given when the ruckus broke out at the JPC meeting of the Waqf Board. The meeting was attended by many eminent personalities including retired judges and Supreme Court lawyers. During this time, Kalyan Banerjee wanted to make his point without taking turns. He had spoken to him three times and he wanted another chance during the presentation. Bharatiya Janata Party MP Abhijeet Gangopadhyay objected to this.
Sources said Kalyan Banerjee used abusive language against Abhijeet Gangopadhyay. However, both parties allegedly used abusive language. Subsequently, the two had a heated argument and the TMC councilor threw a glass bottle on the table, causing him injuries. Thereafter, AAP MP Sanjay Singh and AIMIM MP Owaisi sent the injured Kalyan Banerjee for treatment, and his hand required 4 stitches.
JPC formed to oppose waqf amendment bill
Let us tell you that the political circles in the country are furious over the waqf amendment bill. On August 8, the Modi government introduced two bills in the Lok Sabha, namely the “Religious Endowments (Amendment) Bill, 2024” and the “Muslim Religious Endowments (Abolition) Bill, 2024”. The government said the bills are aimed at improving the functioning of waqf boards and ensuring effective management of waqf properties. The opposition expressed strong objections to some of the provisions. The case was subsequently referred to a joint parliamentary committee for further investigation.
This is why JPC was established
Parliament needs an institution that the entire House has confidence in. A parliamentary committee was established for this purpose. These committees consist only of members of Parliament. The JPC is constituted to investigate cases of financial irregularities in any act or in any government activity. This is necessary because Parliament has a lot of work to do. There is less time to complete these tasks. Because of this, when any work or matter comes to Parliament, it cannot be considered in depth.
In this case, many tasks are handled by committees, which are called parliamentary committees. A Joint Parliamentary Committee was also established for the same purpose. It is composed of members of the two houses, the House of People and the House of Federation. Parliamentary committees are made up of Parliament itself. These committees work under the instructions of the Speaker of the Assembly and submit their reports to the Assembly or the Speaker.
