UP: Court rejects teacher’s anticipatory bail request in case of slapping Muslim boy

A special court in Muzaffarnagar has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of a school teacher in the case of beating a Muslim student. Special Judge Alka Bharti of the court constituted under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) dismissed the bail plea, saying the accused failed to show genuine grounds for such relief.

Earlier, the victim’s lawyer Kamran Zaidi opposed the bail plea, saying the charges against Tyagi had been filed and there was no basis for granting anticipatory bail. After investigating a complaint lodged by the victim’s father Irshad, the prosecution filed charges against Tyagi under Section 323 (intentionally causing hurt) and other sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Juvenile Justice Act.

The incident came to light after a video surfaced in August 2023, in which Tyagi could be seen instructing her students to slap a Muslim boy and make group remarks. The video circulated online and was widely condemned, prompting the Supreme Court to intervene.
