Jigra sparks controversy: Manipur actor scolds makers for unprofessional behavior

October 15, 2024: Alia Bhatt’s latest work, JigraThe film directed by Vasan Bhalla is once again mired in controversy. Manipur actor Bijou Thaangjam has accused the makers of the film of “unprofessional conduct” after the film received mixed reviews and failed to open at the box office. Bijou took to his X account (formerly Twitter) to express his frustration with the way the film’s production team treated him during the casting process.

In a detailed statement, Bijou said he initially considered Jigra in 2023, but miscommunication and mishandling caused him to miss out on other projects. “I sent the tape twice in four months,” Bijou wrote, explaining that despite multiple communications and being told to keep the schedule for December 2023, he was left in the dark and unconfirmed shooting date. He stressed that as someone from Imphal, one has to coordinate travel arrangements, but the production team didn’t seem to take that into consideration. “By the end of November I was told I would be filming in December – but they never gave me any firm dates.”

He concluded his speech by highlighting the difficulties faced by actors from the North East working with major production companies. “It felt particularly dismissive, almost discriminatory. My time was wasted and I missed out on other opportunities,” he said.

Bijou’s revelation sparks another controversy Jigra. Actor Divya Khosla Kumar had earlier accused Alia Bhatt of manipulating box office numbers. While Bhatt has not responded to the accusations, the film’s producer Karan Johar posted a cryptic message on Instagram, saying: “Silence is the best speech for a fool.”

Despite the controversy, Jigra It failed to gain much traction at the box office. The film grossed Rs 425 crore on its first day, making it one of Alia Bhatt’s lowest-grossing films in the past decade. The film has collected Rs 1,675 crore at the box office so far, including Rs 565 crore on the third day.
