2024-09-25 13:30:07 : YouTube is now rolling out new conversational artificial intelligence (AI) features to users. On Tuesday, the company announced that the new tool, which lets users ask questions about the content of specific videos, will be expanded to YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States. Earlier, this feature was available in beta, but now more users can interact with the chatbot using a new button added below the video. The video streaming platform is also rolling out “pause ads,” or ads that play when a video is paused, to a wider user base.

YouTube Premium subscribers will get new conversational AI

TeamYouTube’s official handle announced the feature in a post on X (formerly Twitter). The feature is rolling out to YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States using Android devices. The company did not specify when the feature would be available to users in other regions.

Those eligible to use the feature will soon see a new ask Buttons below the video, on the same line like, shareand download button. Behind the new button is the glowing icon that Google now uses to represent AI-based features. Clicking this button will open a window in place of the comments section where users can enter queries about the video.

Users can ask the AI for details about a specific object shown in the video, the genre of the song being played, or a summary of the video. Additionally, they can ask the AI to recommend similar content. In a support page, the company emphasizes that the tool may not be available on every video. Currently, it supports some English videos.

The company didn’t reveal the name of the large language model (LLM) used for this feature, but explained that “the LLM leverages information from YouTube and the web.” This means conversational AI tools don’t just rely on caption data and video processing to answer user queries.

YouTube collects data every time a user interacts with the tool and submits a query. The company says the data is used to improve and develop products and services. The user’s conversations will be automatically deleted from the server after 45 days.
