Traveling from Delhi Airport Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 or 3 has become very difficult as many times people miss their flights due to congestion and fail to reach the airport on time. To solve this problem, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) decided to build a People Mover (APM) between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2/3.

Skytrain to operate at Delhi airport

Delhi Airport operator DIAL plans to launch SkyTrain to enhance connectivity between Terminal 1 and the other two terminals. Let us tell you that Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is the busiest airport in the country with three terminals. DIAL aims to implement an “elevated and at-grade Automated People Mover (APM)” based on design, construction, finance, operations and transfer model. The tender for APM or SkyTrain has been released.

The APM system is designed to provide reliable, fast and seamless connectivity between Terminal 1 and Terminals 2 and 3, covering a route of approximately 7.7 kilometers through Aerocity and Cargo City. At the same time, the system will improve passenger comfort, improve ASQ scores and reduce carbon emissions.

Currently, one has to take a DTC bus from one terminal of Delhi Airport to another, which takes a long time. But now with SkyTrain in operation, the journey can be completed in minutes. DIAL has invited bids for the project and is expected to start bidding in October-November.

The SkyTrain will make 4 stops. Let us tell you that skytrains operate at airports in many countries around the world. Now it will start in India as well. The cost of improving airport infrastructure is recovered from landing and parking fees collected by airlines.

What is SkyTrain?

Skytrains are usually free to passengers from all over the world and run between terminals. SkyTrain, also known as Automated People Mover (APM), is an automated train system used to connect different airport terminals and other important locations. They operate as monorails and operate at many international airports for the convenience of passengers. Its main goal is to transport passengers from one terminal to another in a fast and convenient manner.

Why does Delhi Airport need a SkyTrain?

Delhi Airport is India’s busiest airport, with more than 70 million passengers flying every year. This number is expected to double in the next 6-8 years. In this case, better connections between terminals are very important. Terminal 1 is some distance away from Terminals 2 and 3. Currently, it takes quite a long time for passengers to travel by road between the two terminals. Hence the decision to operate SkyTrain.
