Harini Amarasuriya was elected as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Amarasuriya heads the Ministries of Justice, Education, Labour, Industry, Science and Technology, Health and Investment. He takes over this responsibility from Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena. Sri Lanka’s new prime minister has deep ties to India and lets us know.

Harini Amarasuriya, the 16th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, is 54 years old. Apart from politics, he is also known for his educational credentials. Amarasuriya studied at the University of Delhi, India. In 1990, he was admitted to the famous Hindu College of Delhi University. He then received a PhD in Social Humanities from the University of Edinburgh. She is a former lecturer at the University of Sri Lanka.

His vision and ideas make him an inspiring leader. Now, as Prime Minister, he faces the astonishing challenge of reorienting the country’s politics and putting it on a path of development.

Amarasuriya becomes the first woman to hold the position since Sirimavo Bandaranaike in 2000. He received his BA in Sociology from Delhi University from 1991 to 1994. His education not only shaped his thinking but also gave him a deep understanding of social issues that enhanced his role in today’s political landscape. After becoming Chancellor and Principal of Hindu College, Anju Srivastava expressed pride over the distinguished alumni of the college.

Anju Srivastava told the Press Trust of India (PTI): “It is an honor to know that a Hindu has become the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Harini became the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka in 1991 student of Sociology during 1994 and we are very proud of her achievements and I hope this will be achieved in his time.” He further said: “Hindu College has a long tradition of student government and we elect one every year. Harini’s appointment as Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition is another milestone in the storied history of our institution.”

Harini Amarsurya is a teammate of Imtiaz Ali and Arnab Goswami.

Amarasuriya’s classmate and now famous Bollywood director Nalin Rajan Singh recalls his school days. “I vaguely remember her and I know she was very involved in university festivals and debates,” he said. It was the 90s and for many of us, people like Imtiaz Ali and Arnab Goswami were starting to come to prominence. It’s great to see him become Prime Minister. ” On the other hand, former director of Hindu College Singh said Amarasuriya’s new role will further strengthen relations between India and Sri Lanka.
