2024-09-24 11:51:04 : Google TV, the company’s TV interface that runs on top of the Android TV operating system, has been updated with several new features on supported devices, including the recently launched Google TV Streamer. Just a few days ago, the Mountain View-based tech giant rolled out a security update for Chromecast with Google TV. With this, Google TV users will see a new home panel that acts as a central hub for all compatible smart home appliances. Additionally, the tech giant said it is using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve sports pages and content overviews.

Google TV gets new update

In a blog post on Monday, the tech giant detailed the new features of the latest Google TV update. These features are currently rolling out and are expected to be available to all users in the coming days.

Users will get a new home panel with the latest updates on the Google TV interface. This will act as a central hub for compatible smart home devices such as lights, thermostats, cameras, and more. Users can control all devices via remote control or by voice using Google Assistant. In addition, users can see doorbell notifications on their smart TVs, allowing users to see who is visiting without getting up from the couch.

The ambient screensaver (the wallpaper that appears when the TV screen is idle) has also been upgraded. Users can now create AI-generated designs and set them as screensavers. Users can browse a series of suggested prompts or enter a prompt and let the AI create a unique piece of art. Alternatively, users can ask Google Assistant to pick their favorite memories from Google Photos and display them.

The new update also integrates artificial intelligence features in different ways. The “Recommended for You” tab will now showcase all sports content in a space called the “Sports” page. Using artificial intelligence, Google TV will make it easier for you to find live and upcoming games, find sports commentary, or browse YouTube highlights. Users can also get personalized recommendations based on their viewing history.

Additionally, the tech giant is using Gemini to provide improved overviews of popular movies and shows. These new overviews come with full summaries, audience reviews, and season-by-season breakdowns to help users decide whether they like the content.

Last year, Google TV launched free built-in channels, allowing users to watch regionally available channels without any downloads or subscriptions. The feature is called Google TV Freeplay, and it’s now being upgraded to a channel guide. With this feature, users can browse daily TV schedules by genre and topic and find their favorite shows.
