Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Mahila Morcha gathered crowds on Monday to “clean up” several police stations in West Bengal to rectify lapses and oversights in the violence against a junior doctor in Kolkata. They protested by spraying Ganges water outside many police stations and decontaminating them by applying cow dung paste with brooms.
BJP Mahila Morcha workers led the movement under the leadership of BJP leaders Agnimitra Paul and Locket Chatterjee as a protest in Kolkata last month Alleged blunders are part of the investigation into the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the government-run RG Kar Hospital.
Two BJP leaders, along with other party workers, claimed that the “cleansing” of the police station was over after policemen were found guilty of alleged misconduct. Therefore, they protested by sprinkling holy water from the Ganges in front of the police station and sweeping cow dung with brooms.
BJP leader Agnimitra Paul said they had come here as a symbolic protest to clear the police station in Behala, South Kolkata. Where were the police when the doctor’s body was hastily cremated and the timing of the FIR did not coincide with the timing of the post-mortem investigation, the BJP leader said.
On August 9, a female junior doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The CBI is currently investigating the doctor’s death. The central agency arrested three people, including former university president Sandeep Ghosh and a police officer, in connection with the probe.
Locket Chatterjee protested in front of the DC North office in Maniktala, north Kolkata, breaking through police barricades and sweeping away the feces with a broom. Ahead of the CBI investigation, opposition parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party accused the police of serious lapses in investigating the case.
