On this mission, NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov from Roscosmos will travel to the International Space Station. However, due to recent developments, the mission took an unexpected turn and turned into a rescue operation.

Changes in crew dynamics

Initially, the plan included two other NASA astronauts, Zena Cadman and Stephanie Wilson, joining Hague and Gorbunov. However, to meet the urgent need to return at safety, they were replaced by Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams. The latter was trapped on the International Space Station due to technical issues aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, which faced major failures, including multiple thruster failures and leaks in the propulsion system. Therefore, NASA chose to return the spacecraft to Earth on September 7, 2024, without a crew.

The decision to keep Wilmore and Williams on the International Space Station was primarily based on safety concerns. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson emphasized the agency’s commitment to avoiding unnecessary risks to astronauts. While Wilmore and Williams were originally expected to fly on a short-term mission of about ten days, they now face an extended stay in space, up to nearly eight months. The adjustment highlights the challenges of maintaining astronaut safety during missions.

Not only will Crew-9 perform the rescue mission, it will also mark several important milestones for NASA. The launch will be the first manned flight from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
